Peculiarities of Semantic Redundancy in English Drama

Abstract

The article considers the main characteristics of linguistic phenomenon of redundancy in drama. The study showed that redundancy has a strong pragmatic potential. In the article two types of semantic redundancy were identified and specified according to the employed function and repetition scheme. As the basis for the realization of semantic redundancy types of repetitions, pause and hesitation were analyzed.

As a result, typological differences were established between these languages in functional, structural and quantitative aspects.

Development of Semantics in English and Spanish “Crying” Verbs

Abstract

The article deals with the development of semantics of frequent “crying” verbs in English and Spanish based on etymological, ideographic and explanatory dictionaries. It focuses on the conceptual components that represent crying as an expression of sad emotions (presence / absence of tears, intensity and duration of the sound, etc.). The article considers, on the one hand, a large number of similar features and identical main components inherent in the analyzed verbs, and on the other - close connection of the ideas of crying and screaming in the English verbs, absent in Spanish ones.

Phraseological Units in Cinematic Discourse: Greeting and Parting Formulas (based on Chinese)

Abstract

The research is aimed at studying the linguocreative function of greeting and parting formulas based on the material of Chinese film discourse. The method of discursive-parametric analysis is used as the main one. The article presents the results of a study of the microparameter “phraseology (speech formulas)”. The main groups of speech formulas functioning in the Chinese comedy film discourse are described with the peculiarities of their occurrence discussed and compared.

Abstract

The main aim of the research is to make an inventory of strategies employed by different world languages in order to iconically encode non-non-linguistic content. The research methods include the holistic approach, the descriptive, structural, semantic, and componential analyses. Research results revealed that as a self-regulating system, language tends to retain a number of motivated, iconic items. This strategy is a viable mechanism, which serves such language functions as mnemonic, ludic, expressive, emotive and evaluative.

In the present article, the author undertakes the attempt to study the beauty industry discourse in the general discourse paradigm on the basis of the modern English language. The author concludes that the beauty industry determines its linguistic representation and forms an extensive field of the relevant discourse as a special communicative environment with its specific features and key parameters, such as communication participants, key concepts and values, a chronotope , communicative goals, speech strategies and a range of genres.

Abstract

The article is devoted to the specific features of dialectal differentiation on the example of European and Brazilian variants of the Portuguese language. The main conclusion is made that the considered variants of dialects do not always have a clear distinction, and sometimes they can be defined as subdialects. The article is designed for teachers of the Portuguese language at higher educational institutions, as well as for linguistic specialists-interpreters of the Portuguese language for a better interpretation of dialects of different variants of the Portuguese language on the example of the European and the Brazilian variants of the language.

Particularities of the Inventory of Phraseological Neologisms in Military-Political Discourse

The article discusses some particularities of the language specialist’s lexicographic work with phraseological neologisms in texts created for the purpose of speech manipulation and drawing the rhetorical opponent into a discursive trap. A theoretical basis for the inventory of phraseological neologisms is also given. The problem is of interest in the framework of researches in the field of translation / interpretation, text analysis, discourse analysis, and political science. The problem acquires particular importance in the context of aggravated international relations.

Stylistic Features of Russian-Language Internet Communication of the Younger Generation

Abstract

The article presents the results of the content analysis of adolescents' (younger and older adolescent groups of schoolchildren ) Internet communication. The basis of the study was school chats with certain content topics, which made it possible to identify lexical categories that complement and transform stylistic means depending on the situation of communication. It is concluded that in the Russian-language youth society there is both a general tendency towards a “toxically” saturated vocabulary of Internet communication and particular (age- and gender-related) features of communicants.

Political Communication in the USA in the Field of Historical Discourse Studies

Abstract

The author considers the prospects for turning to the tools of historical discourse studies while examining American presidential communicative culture. It is argued that euphemisation plays a constitutive role and is used as a leading cognitive strategy in constructing a political public speech. An intense pragma-emotional impact on the addressee is provided by the polytropic character of context and extended metaphor, viewed as an invariant characteristic of American presidential discourse.

Verbalisation of the Evaluation of the Economic Situation in Great Britain on the Basis of the British Newspaper The Guardian

Abstract

The article focuses on the linguistic ways of evaluation of the economic situation in Britain after its exit from the European Union. Economic discourse which is a sum total of different communicative acts is represented by the editorial from the British newspaper “The Guardian”. The newspaper article implements the economic discourse evaluating different facts of economic reality. The analysis revealed that the consequences of Britain’s exit from the EU are viewed as extremely negative which is verified by an extensive use of lexical grammatical and stylistic means and devices.

Cognitive-Stylistic Characteristics of Alliteration in Modern English Publicistic Discourse

Abstract

Peculiar characteristics of the actualised cognitive-stylistic device of alliteration in the English-language publicistic and media texts are scrutinized. Extracts of up-dated American and British verbal printed matter and publications of information agencies are employed for detailed stylistic analysis. The significance and the novelty of the research can be explicated by a substantial place alliteration occupies in information sources along with such phonetic devices as rhythm, rhyme and onomatopoeia. Speech functions of alliteration are worded.

Industrial Novel in the Literature of Turkic Peoples

Abstract

This article discusses the features of the industrial novel in the literature of the Turkic peoples of the former USSR. Reflecting on the processes of the formation of the industrial novel as part of the literature of the Turkic peoples of the former USSR, the author reveals the fact that the first industrial novels arose under the influence of Russian Soviet literature, in particular, such works as the “Blast furnace” by N. Lyashko and the “Cement” by F. Gladkov. The policy of the nationalization of the literature made an irreversible process of forming a new genre modification, which served as the propaganda of the country’s industrialization policy.

The idea of the “American dream” is prevalent in the works of great American playwrights; the concept’s evolution and disappointment therein in the middle of the 20th century, in the aftermath of the Great Depression (1929-1939) and World War II (1939-1945), is that of great interest. In the article, several plays by this era’s leading playwrights are analyzed, the main features, symbolic and thematic, which illustrate the concept, as well as the ways in which they are used in deconstructing the concept are highlighted.

Approaches to branding are undergoing significant transformations influenced by the emergence of new media, VR and AR that significantly changed the mechanisms of communication interaction, where interactivity and omnichannel have become the main tools. In the practice of branding, the leading socio-cultural trend is becoming immersion into the metaverse as a product of convergence of physical, augmented and virtual reality in a common offline and online space. The Motive of Punishment of Sinners in the Culture and Art of French Gothic

Abstract

This article is devoted to the analysis of the interpretation of the theme of the Last Judgment in the art of French Gothic. Each cathedral built in the Gothic era has a tympanum, the theme of which is the Last Judgment, and where the fragment with the punishment of sinners carries the main moral lesson to ordinary believers. Thus, this motif acts as one of the leading ones in the decoration of French Gothic churches, which determines its important place in the picture of the world of a medieval Christian.
