“Power that did not generate income”: Seyyid Muhammad Riza about the Kazan Khanate

Aksanov A.

Resumo

The purpose of the study: Study the information of Seyyid Muhammad Riza about the Kazan Khanate.

Research materials: “Seven planets in the news about the Tatar kings”, “Umdet al-akhbar”, Russian chronicles, historical works, diplomatic documents, etc.

Results and scientific novelty. In the essay “Seven Planets in the News of the Tatar Kings” by Seyyd Muhammad Riza, the history of the Crimean Khanate and Crimean-Ottoman relations is presented in great detail. Against the background of the fact that the history of the Kazan Khanate is strongly intertwined with the history of the Crimean Khanate, the lapidary nature in the description of Crimean-Kazan relations and the history of the Kazan Khanate as a whole, looks very symptomatic. Based on a textual analysis of news about the Kazan Khanate and diplomatic documents, we came to conclusion that Seyyid Muhammad Riza deliberately “kept silent” about some important events in the history of the Crimean-Russian, Crimean-Kazan and Ottoman-Russian relations, so as not to raise “inconvenient” questions for Porta. It is important that the origins of this approach are found in the Ottoman policy itself at the end of the 15th and first half of the 16th centuries. The sultans did not show much interest in Kazan affairs and forwarded all requests from Kazan citizens to Crimea. Obviously, the Ottomans’ policy of ignoring the “Kazan problem” was determined by their aspirations in the Central European Theater of military operations. In this vein, Sayyid Muhammad Riza's narrative appears to be an apologetics for Ottoman foreign policy.

Resumo

The article is about one of the most important works devoted to the history of the Crimean Khanate, the historical work “Seven Planets in the News of the Tatar Kings” (“As-sab’ as-sayyar fi akhbari muluk at-Tatar”) by the Ottoman author Seyyid Muhammad Riza, who most likely was of Crimean Tatar origin and came from the Seyid stratum and was part of the elite of the Ottoman Empire, in charge of the affairs of the Seyids. The title of the work has an allegorical meaning and is associated with the sacred meaning of the number seven and means “seven significant khans who ruled within the Crimea.” The work “As-sab‘ as-sayyar fi akhbari muluk at-tatar” was written between 1737–1747 and is an example of the chronicle genre (tawarikh) with a presentation of events in chronological order. In total, eight copies of the composition are known, which are stored in Turkey, Russia and Egypt. All of them were rewritten between 1755–1756 and 1791. The first publication of the original text of the work belongs to A.K. Kazembek.

The functioning of the Crimean Tatar language in the authorities and administration of the Crimean Autonomous Soviet Socialist Republic in the context of the policy of indigenization (20–30s of the XX century)

Kondratjuk G.

Resumo

The article analyzes the main directions of the indigenization policy. The use of the Crimean Tatar language in the work of government and management bodies has been studied.

The Bolsheviks' hopes for a proletarian revolution in Western Europe did not come true, and the vector of foreign policy hopes became the East (Turkey and Iran). The creation of the Crimean autonomy was supposed to demonstrate that the needs of the Turkic peoples could be resolved in the Soviet Union, but not in the principles of Kemalism, but in the Communist Party. In this task, the Crimean Tatars were to act as conductors of Bolshevik ideas. This circumstance formed the basis of the specificity of the policy of indigenization on the peninsula, which was reflected in the term “Tatarization”. A special direction of national policy has become the indigenization of government and administrative institutions, and an important political aspect is the use of the Crimean Tatar language in the area of state building. The author proposes a periodization of the implementation of national policy, which is divided into four stages. 1) 1917–1923 – search for conceptual principles for the implementation of ethnopolicy; 2) 1923–1928 – official proclamation of indigenization and an attack on national communists in the Turkic republics; 3) 1928–1934 – administrative stage; 4) 1934–1938 – formation of national collective farms and the Crimean Tatar proletariat.

Research materials: The theoretical works of the leaders of the People's Commissariat of Nationalities of the RSFSR were used, as well as unpublished documents from the State Archive of the Republic of Crimea.

Results and novelty of the research: The article analyzes the relationship between various aspects of the indigenization policy in the Crimean Autonomous Soviet Socialist Republic and the change in the legal status of the Crimean Tatar language.

Perspectives of Turkish foreign policy based on analysis of Romanian documents

Cojocaru I.

Resumo

After 29 October 1923, when the status of the nation as a republic was declared and its official name was proclaimed to be Türkiye Cumhuriyeti ("the Republic of Turkey"), the officials followed a defensive policy and the Turkish status became part of defensive alliances. In this sense, treaties with the USSR were signed, Turkey was part of the Balkan Agreement and had agreements with Great Britain, France, etc. An increased attention was paid to the Balkan space where the legacy of the Ottoman Empire was visible. Ankara’s diplomats appealed to the Turkish-Tatar communities that lived in the geographical area of Balkans to move to the new Turkish state. The Treaty of Lausanne and then the Treaty of Montreux were vital – in the first – for the security of the new Turkish state, but also for the states bordering the Black Sea. From political point of view, the main priority of the foreign turkish policy was to pursue an alliances policy, seeking to maintain and consacrate by treaties its territorial integrity stability in its own influence areas.

Role of A.S. Aivazov in the Process of Primary Schools Reform in Crimea (1910s)

Kerim I.

Resumo

After the death of I. Gasprinsky in 1914, the newspaper “Terdzhiman” was headed by the famous Crimean Tatar writer and publicist A.S. Aivazov. Under his leadership, a broad discussion was launched in the newspaper related to reforms in the field of national education in the primary grades of Crimea. The article makes an attempt to study the processes of reforms in education in the native language, showing a number of textbooks and teaching aids recommended by the general meeting of muallims (teachers) for use in the educational process in primary schools. Attention is drawn to the fact that it was these discussions that later acquired a national scale and led to the creation of the Mengli Giray Institute in Bakhchisaray in 1917, the first graduates of which, having received diplomas in 1920, joined the national teaching staff of Crimea.

The Motives of Death in B. Chobanzade’s Lyrical and Journalistic Diary “The Song of the Reed-Pipe” and its Place in the Context of the Author's Creative Explorations

Kirimov T.

Resumo

Based on the materials of the artistic day book “Song of the Reed-Pipe”, the poetics of the early work of Bekir Chobanzade, one of the brightest representatives of the Crimean Tatar literature of 1917–1920, is thoroughly considered. This is the time of political, revolutionary upheavals; the formation of the people's liberation movement of Muslims in the Crimea; the convocation of the First Democratic Kurultai, which proclaimed: the restoration of equal rights for women, the abolition of class privileges, the allotment of peasants with land, the idea of founding national and cultural autonomy. “Reed-Pipe Songs” were written by the author during his studies in Hungary and Switzerland. Loneliness, longing after ancestral home, worries about the fate of the motherland, the search for the meaning of life occupy the main place in his creative heritage. Selfless struggle and heroic death for the freedom of the people in the understanding of B. Chobanzade are the meaning of the life of every Tatar. He prays to the Almighty for a glorious death for himself and a life full of suffering for his enemies. Pessimistic romanticism, civic spirit determine the creative character of the writer. Despite the fact that B. Chobanzade is known as a major specialist in the study of languages and literatures of the Turkic peoples, his literary personality has been studied only in a perfunctory manner. The main reason for this is the complex imagery of the language of the works, the depth of the author's philosophical thought based on national traditions and mythology. The works of previous researchers of the life and creative path of the cultural actor are analyzed. The main linguistic, generic-topical, stylistic features of the literary texts of the mentioned collection are revealed. The philosophical and aesthetic component of the motives of death in the works of B. Chobanzade is comprehended.

Mutual influence of the Crimean Tatar and Crimean-Armenian cultures in the context of musical, lexical and antroponymic parallels

Zaatov I.

Resumo

The process of formation of the Crimean Tatar musical culture, as a whole, can be divided into periods of post-Byzantine – Kypchak – Golden Horde, Tatar – Seljuk – Islamic, Ottoman – Nogai ethno-musical influence on the development of this process, as well as on the period of merging of the musical culture of the steppe and south mountain Crimean Tatars (Tats). The process of formation of the Crimean Tatar musical art, to a certain extent, was also influenced by the musical culture of the Crimean-Armenians who lived together with the Crimean Tatars in the Crimea for half a thousand years and were evicted in 1778 to the lower Don. The author made an attempt to identify and,on the basis of lexical analysis of the language and historical antroponymy of the Crimean-Armenians and Crimean Tatars, as well as on the level of mutual influence and interpenetration of the musical cultures of both ethnic groups – to fix the degree of participation of the musical and song folklore of the Crimean-Armenians in the development of the Crimean Tatar musical culture.

“Knowing this is of no benefit, but ignorance of this is harmless”*

Seytumerov S.

Resumo

As Islam spread, ties with non-Muslim communities expanded. Among those who converted to Islam were also scholars who know the Torah and the Gospel. Converting to Islam, they shared with Muslims biblical descriptions of events mentioned in the Qur`an and Sunnah. One of the biblical stories, mentioned in Quran and in commentaries to it, is well-known story about “people in cave” – seven sleeping lads. The legend is expounded in sura Al-Kahf. Worship of sleeping lads, that took place in the whole Christian world over time found reflection in Islamic tradition. This story acquired with popularity in the most remote parts of muslim territory. This process did not bypass the Muslims of the Crimea, expressed, for example, in the practice of turning to the legend about the inhabitants of the cave.

Review of the book: Badr al-Din Muhammad b. Muhammad Kaysuni-zadeh Nidai-efendi (Remmal-khoja). The History of Khan Sahib Giray (Moscow, 2023)

Anikeeva T.

Resumo

The review provides a brief overview of the publication of “The History of Khan Sahib Giray”, carried out in 2023 by I.V. Zaitsev and R.R. Abduzhemilev, which serves the urgent task of studying and publishing sources on the history of the Crimean Khanate and the history of Islam in Crimea. This work, according to I.V. Zaitsev, is the earliest historical work on the Crimean Khanate that has come down to our time (it was written after the assassination of the khan in 1551 and completed in the summer of 1553) and has the character of an absolute panegyric to the ruling khan. The chronicle of Remmal Khoja covers the actual period of the reign of Khan Sahib Giray I, ending with a description of his death, funeral and a request from his daughter Nur Sultan to write an essay. The publication is accompanied by two articles – by I.V. Zaitsev ("The History of Khan Sahib Giray") and R.R. Abduzhemilev ("A literary view of the work of Remmal-khoja"), contains two texts of the translation of "The History of Khan Sahib Giray" and a facsimile of the chronicle list stored in the collection of the Library of the Oriental Faculty of St. Petersburg State University. The publication is provided with an indeces of names and geographical and ethnic names. This book contains not only translations of Remmal-Khoja’s work, made in two editions, but is the first publication of fragments of V.D. Smirnov’s work – in other words, this edition reflects a certain stage in the development of Russian Turkology.

Book review: Seyyid Muhammed Riza. Seven Planets in the News about the Tatar kings. Book 2: Translation (Kazan, 2023)

Abduzhemilev R.

Resumo

The matter for consideration in the review is the translation of the chronicle “Seven Planets in the News about the Tatar kings” from Ottoman into Russian, made by I.R. Gibadullin and published as a continuation to the first transliteration-book by M.A. Usmanov Center for Research of the Golden Horde and Tatar Khanates of Marjani Institute of History of the Tatarstan Academy of Sciences. The translation is close to the original, it opens access to the content of the source and serves as an intermediate step for further work on the chronicle, which determines the significance of the translation. Some contradictory theses from the preface to the book are noted. The translation is analyzed from the perspective of form and content.
