Ginette Michaud in the Context of Canadian Bakhtin Studies
Abstract
The article precedes the translation of the work by Canadian literary scholar and writer Ginette Michaud “Reading Bakhtin in Bakhtinian” published in this issue of the journal. It presents a brief overview of the history of Bakhtin studies in Canada. The main attention is paid to French-language texts, including those in a special issue of the periodical “Études françaises” (University of Montreal, 1984), dedicated to M. M. Bakhtin. It considers the main stages of Ginette Michaud’s creative biography. The article fills a gap in the study of the history of bakhtinology abroad.

Abstract
This is an authorized translation from French of the article by a well-known Canadian writer and literary scholar, professor emeritus in the Department of Francophone Literature at the University of Montreal (Quebec, Canada) Ginette Michaud (b. 1955). The work was first published in the journal “Études françaises“ (University of Montreal) in 1984, but has not yet been used by Russian Bakhtin scholars. It is published in Russian for the first time.



Scientific Seminar ”Biography “on the Edges”: Bakhtin the Reader and His Marginalia in the Context of the Reconstruction of the Thinker’s Life”
Abstract
The article gives an overview of the reports of the participants of the V International scientific seminar “Biography “on the edges”: Bakhtin the reader and his marginalia in the context of the reconstruction of the thinker’s life”. The seminar presented the preliminary results of a considerable volume of research related to the study of M.M. Bakhtin’s reading notes in the context of the research of his scientific biography.



Human and Machine: “Creative Understanding” in Translation Studies
Abstract
The article presents an analysis of the concept “creative understanding” in the context of literary translation. Based on the works of M. M. Bakhtin, O. R. Demidova, V. I. Karasik, V. P. Furmanova and other researchers, the authors consider the text of the translation as a cultural phenomenon, and the translation process as creative understanding, the necessary conditions of which are: immersion into the cultural and historical context, creativity, emotional coloring, the use of artistic elements. The authors point out the need for cooperation between human and automated intelligence when translating a text into another language.

Places in Vitebsk, Related to M. M. Bakhtin’s Life
Abstract
The article analyzes the signs of the urban environment of Vitebsk (Republic of Belarus) associated with the life and work of M.M. Bakhtin in 1920–1924. At the beginning of the 20th century, Vitebsk was a provincial city developed in architectural and cultural respects, where various ethnic, religious, urban planning, and cultural traditions were intertwined. In the post-revolutionary years, Vitebsk became one of the recognized centers of the artistic avant-garde. It considers the urban planning axes of the railway station – center, center – south and center – north, which were the main development and communication channels. The key objects of Vitebsk topography are the Vitebsk Art School, Cathedral Square, Suvorov and Lenin Streets. The author specifies the addresses of public and residential buildings associated with M.M. Bakhtin’s stay in Vitebsk. A number of iconic buildings have received the status of cultural heritage sites and have been turned into museums, many have memorial plaques, sculptures have been placed in the urban environment, and wall paintings have been introduced. In recent decades, much has been done to establish in the urban environment historical memory, including the brief and vivid post-revolutionary rise of culture. Today, this era is one of Vitebsk’s brands.



Pastoral Plots in the Music of Modern Composers: “Daphnis and Chloe” by Sergey Terkhanov
Abstract
The vocal-choral cycle “Daphnis and Chloe” by the talented composer from Mordovia S. Ya. Terkhanov (1954–2014) is one of the most original interpretations of the ancient novel by Longus (2nd century AD). The article provides a brief overview of the reception of the novel by outstanding figures of world culture (I. V. Goethe), representatives of the literature of the Silver Age (D. S. Merezhkovsky), Russian scientists – culturologists, philologists, philosophers (M. M. Bakhtin, S. Ya. Lurye), representatives of literary criticism of the 1960s (E. A. Berkova, S. V. Polyakova). The article considers interpretations of the plot of the novel in literature, fine art, and music. In relation to this context, the author reveals the features of the interpretation of the famous pastoral plot by S. Ya. Terkhanov, analyzes the musical style and manner of the composer.



Profitable Housing Construction in Russia in the Late 19th – Early 20th as a Cultural Phenomenon
Abstract
The article examines tenement houses built during the construction boom of the
19th – early 20th centuries and which became a true decoration of Russian cities and objects of cultural heritage. It is shown that tenement houses satisfy all the components of Vitruvius’ architectural triad (strength – use – beauty), but the main one today is beauty.
