Stylistic functions of one-member verb sentences in newspaper discourse

INTRODUCTION. The relevance of the study is substantiated by the necessity of studying the means of newspaper discourse which is an integral part of the modern media and informational space. The purpose of the study is to identify the types of one-member verb sentences used in the newspaper language, determine the frequency of different types and analyze their stylistic functions in newspaper texts.
MATERIALS AND METHODS. The research material is the publications of the newspaper “Arguments and Facts”. The methods used are the method of solid sampling, statistical method, methods of structural-semantic and functional-stylistic analysis of linguistic units, contextual analysis.
RESULTS AND DISCUSSION. 455 one-member verb sentences are identified; the frequency of their types is determined. It is found that in newspaper publications impersonal constructions are presented in the greatest number, followed by definite-personal and indefinite-personal, the frequency of which in the newspaper language is approximately the same. The fourth place is occupied by infinitive sentences. The minimum number of generalizedpersonal constructions is represented.
CONCLUSION. Definite-personal sentences are active in the newspaper language as a source of brevity, dynamism, expressiveness. Indefinite-personal sentences make newspaper texts lively and light, emphasize the reader's attention to the action without mentioning the subject. Generalized-personal constructions are used to involve the reader in the described events, “generalization” of the author with the audience. Impersonal sentences are primarily characteristic of the interview genre, which conveys the features of oral speech. Infinitive sentences are used to convey the speech of the interlocutor in a dialog and the judgments of the author of the publication; to reproduce an aphoristic statement; to attract the readers' attention to the content of the article as part of the subheading; to attract the attention of potential consumers in advertising texts.
