Аннотация
The article sets out to analyze the story "A Day’s Wait" by E. Hemingway to show that from a linguistic perspective, the so-called in literary criticism Iceberg story structure can be viewed as a textual opposition based on the contrast between the verbalized central event and a character’s hidden emotions about it. Methods of structural and narrative analysis applied to the narrator’s inner monologue, and contextual analysis applied to the dialogues, serve to reconstruct the inner fear that the main character experiences as a result of his illness. It is stressed that interpretation of literary works with the Iceberg structure involves the hermeneutic circle approach.
