Multimodal Patterns of Speech Disfluencies Compensators (Based on Student Dialogic Discourse)

Abstract

Speech as a multidimensional phenomenon still remains relevant in linguistics studies. It is known that verbal communication evolved later than non-verbal one, however, a multimodal approach to language communication modeling based on spontaneous dialogues is only gaining momentum in Russian linguistics studies.The aim of the article is to provide data on principles of verbal and non-verbal correlation at times of difficulty during the development of spoken discourse between two speakers, as well as to systematize them in the most frequent multimodal patterns.The material of the article is 16 video clips of spontaneous dialogues of Russian native speakers, the total timing is 1.5 hours. The annotated video materials are students’ spontaneous dialogic discourse. The topics of dialogues can be divided into two groups – communication between friends/colleagues and communication between the client and service staff. Each video clip is annotated in ELAN v.6.2. The presented results are based on general linguistic methods of description and comparison, as well as a method of analyzing a cognitive event. Analyzing cognitive events and providing statistics on the subject, we describe the main multimodal patterns, which have been classified by the frequent nature of some speech disfluencies and non-verbal response to them. Our study is based on the gestural repetition concept. As a result, the most common speech disfluencies have been identified and divided into five large blocks. Each of the blocks is accompanied by the main multimodal patterns, implemented in different channels – manual channel, gaze channel and cephalic channel. The number of speech disfluencies recorded at the external level directly depends on the topic and not always on the level of competence of the speakers, since all dialogues are improvised by students who only have presuppositions regarding the deployment of discourse depending on the given role.Speech disfluencies and the principles of their compensation in different multimodal channels depend on both internal (cognitive) and external factors (overlapping and interruptions), which represent an interpenetrating indivisible system.

Cognitive Modelling of Term System “Open Architectural Space Design”

Abstract

At this stage of the terminology development, terminologists are particularly interested in studying the terminology of special fields of knowledge using a cognitive approach. The use of frame analysis in terms of this approach makes it possible to present the terminology model of any professional field most successfully. The purpose of the paper is to build a cognitive-frame model of the Russian term system of the field “Open architectural space design” as a fragment of the architectural and design terminology of the professional sphere “Design of architectural environment”. The material for the analysis is more than 680 lexical units of the field “Open architectural space design”, selected using a continuous sampling method from texts of educational, scientific and Internet sources of the specialty “Design of the architectural environment”, architectural design and linguistic dictionaries and reference books. The research methodology is based on general scientific and linguistic methods and techniques: descriptive, comparative methods, methods of classification and linguistic modeling, as well as definitional, contextual and frame analysis. The basic concepts within the framework of the cognitive approach are defined. The interpretation of the terms frame, subframe, slot is presented. The theoretical foundations of frame modeling are highlighted, the frame structure used in the study is justified. A hierarchical cognitive-frame model of the term system “Open architectural space design” is constructed, consisting of three frames: “Urban environment design”, “Landscape design”, “Lighting design”. Within each frame, units of lower levels such as subframes, slots and micro-slots are allocated. Interframe processes have been studied: the relations of intersection within the macroframe “Open architectural space design”, including between units of different levels, as well as the relations of intersection with the macroframe “Interior Design” are revealed. The special role of the frame “Lighting Design” is defined, consisting of general terminology for the macroframes “Open architectural space design” and “Interior design” and specific terms for each of them. The frame model of the term system “Open architectural space design” makes it possible to present a hierarchically organized system of the terminology and identify its intra-system relationships. The results of the research can be useful for terminologists, specialists in the field of architectural environment design, for teaching practice in universities.

Axiological Dominant “Family”: the Specifics of Representation in Linguodidactic Discourse (Based on Textbooks on Russian as a Foreign Language)

Abstract

The purpose of the article is to analyze the specifics of the representation of the family value dominants existing in Russian culture, presented in the textbooks on Russian as a foreign language by Russian and foreign authors. The material of the study are textbooks on Russian as a foreign language by Russian, Chinese and English-speaking authors written in the period from 2007–2018, with a total volume of more than 3,100 pages. We selected dialogues and narrative texts related to the topic of “family” from these materials using a continuous sampling method, allowing to analyze axiological dominants and linguistic means of their expression in various family aspects. The analysis of the obtained data was carried out using the methods of contextual analysis, lexical and semantic as well as comparative analysis.Family is one of the main value dominants for the Russian people. In textbooks on Russian as a foreign language, Russian authors mainly use positive value judgments, neutral or negative value judgments are used rarely. Chinese authors of the textbooks on the Russian language broadcast mainly a positive assessment of the family institute. English-speaking authors prefer neutral connotations. Individual parameters are also evaluated in different ways. In relationship between spouses, Russian authors often promote husband’s authority. Considering family responsibilities, household management is assigned exclusively to a woman, while work is typical for both men and women. Foreign authors mainly present in their textbooks a model of joint household management; husband’s authority in their works is not mentioned. Children are the dominant value in most cultures, however, it was found that when referring to children, Chinese authors use exclusively neutral vocabulary, while Russian and English-speaking authors prefer emotional expressions (mostly positive, less often negative). When describing the relationship to older relatives (especially grandmothers), Russian authors use value judgments that are of an exceptionally positive nature. In contrast, Chinese authors use a neutral assessment of grandparents. English-speaking authors in their works do not describe the relationships between children and grandparents. Among Russian and foreign authors there is also a variability in the specifics of describing the relationship between parents and their children. Unlike English-speaking authors, who do not focus on the mutual relationship of children and parents and use mostly neutral vocabulary when describing this value category, Russian and Chinese authors emphasize respect for parents and mutual concern.The analysis showed, that despite the general ideas about good and approved that exist in different cultures, the authors of the textbooks on the Russian language implicitly represent the value orientations inherent in their culture. The specificity is determined not only by the differences in the choice of certain lexical groups, but also in the subconscious emphasis on values that are significant for the culture of the authors of the materials.

Constructive Overcoming the Problems of Consciousness

Abstract

The present article is devoted to the linguistic aspect of constructive solving of consciousness problems both in the individual independent activity, and in the process of group education. The author operates with the philosophic categories of non-linearity in the system of speech, dissipation of consciousness and its “pluses” and “minuses”, from the psychological point of view. Relatively new philosophic notions of graduality and ingraduality of mind as the speech trends are analyzed. The author dwells upon the problem of virtual reality (VR). The aim of the article is to picture the obvious benefits of constructive approach to solving the problems of mind in the framework of conjoint philosophic categories of virtuality, graduality and ingraduality, non-linearity and dissipation.We use the constructive approach, based on positive thinking in solving the mind problems, particularly, in making up the speech and in memorizing. The applied method is that of psychological associations, while memorizing foreign words, with the active context submerging on the example of A. Burgess’s book “A Clockwork Orange” in English. The associations fall into the content ones and purely linguistic examples, with free associations for everybody. The key to the used methods is the mediation of practice. The author of the article comes to the conclusion that only constant efforts in memorizing and creative modification of the necessary information, the worked out skill to cope with the mind problems constructively in practice are effective both in the process of education and in everyday life. The diversity of memorizing methods through practice, the projecting of the studied material onto everyday life as a hint to action are really working approaches. The search for links of the word under investigation with reality, the necessary activity foster the motivation of memory work in the foreign language (I added 24 words out of the necessary 13). The practical value of the present paper is determined by the necessity of everyday mind efforts in solving the problems of education and the household and is substantiated by the 20-year pedagogical experience of the author, practicing mnemotechnology in the framework of philosophic notions in the modern science.

Multimodal Specifics of COVID-19 Poster: Impact on the Audience

Abstract

In recent years, COVID-19 encourages medical organizations to intensify informing the population to stop the spread of the infection. A health poster is one of the most popular educational tools for the mass, therefore it is necessary to pay attention to linguistic and extralinguistic aspects of poster which have a big impact on people.The aim of the article is to identify the main strategies and tactics used in COVID-19 posters to prevent the infection, and to compare verbal and visual features of a health poster in Russian and English.The material for the study is health posters aimed at COVID-19 prevention in the English and Russian languages, posted on the official websites of various medical and healthcare organizations. The main method used in the study is multimodal discourse analysis.The article presents a comprehensive analysis of the main aspects of verbal and nonverbal impact in COVID-19 posters in English and Russian. Using multimodal discourse analysis, we distinguished the main strategies and tactics of COVID-19 posters impact, as well as their common and distinctive features in English and Russian. The main strategies used in the COVID-19 poster include the draw attention strategy, the informing strategy, the call for protection strategy, and the prohibition strategy.There are four strategies of the COVID-19 poster to impact the audience. Each strategy implements particular tactics using language, images, composition and other features. Moreover, there are some differences in posters in English and Russian from a cultural point of view, which can be explained by different context of communication between the two cultures, according to E. Hall’s research.

The Problem of Variability in Biblical Phraseological Units

Abstract

The problem of linguistic variability remains acute due to the dynamism of national language development. The study of phraseological units of biblical etymology in the aspect of their variability has recently become increasingly significant, as the fact of wide use of phraseological units derived from biblical texts and stories in various types of discourse is noted. The diversity of variants of biblical phrases requires identifying, organising and structuring the types of their variation.The aim of the research is to identify new variants of biblical phraseological units that are widely used in various discourse types (fiction, media, publicistic, historical, political). Contexts that verify the resulting data of the research were borrowed from the British National Corpus (BNC), News on the Web (NOW) and electronic dictionary Reverso Context (RC).Language material for the research was extracted out of 3 phraseological dictionaries: 1) the bilingual “English-Russian phraseological dictionary” by Alexander V. Kunin, 2) “English-German-Swedish Dictionary of Biblical Phraseology” by Tatyana N. Fedulenkova and others, 3) the multilingual phraseological dictionary “The Mite of Biblical Wisdom” by Zoya K. Adamia and others. The research methods, namely the method of the phraseological identification, the method of the structural and componential analysis, the method of the quantitative analysis and the method of contextual analysis, allow to analyse 350 phraseological units of biblical origin that are actively used in modern English and identify a set of variants that include both usual and occasional simple variants, i.e. lexical and grammatical, quantitative variants of phraseological units and mixed or complex variants of phraseological units.It was found out that along with linguistic variation, phraseological variation is the result of the natural development of language as a system. Variation of biblical phraseological units is not equaled to phraseological synonymy. The analysis of selected biblical phraseological units allowed us to identify the following types of variants: simple variants and complex variants (e.g. substantive-quantitative variants, adjectival-quantitative variants, verbal-quantitative variants) of phraseological units. Within each of the given groups, a division into usual and occasional variants is made. Simple variants are represented by lexical variants (including substantive variants, prepositional variants, prepositional-substantive variants, attributive variants, verbal variants); grammatical variants (including morphological variants and morpho-syntactical variants); quantitative variants (with truncation and addition of components). Truncated parts of a phraseological unit may be represented by three types (truncation of the initial part of the phraseological unit; truncation of the final part of the phraseological unit; mixed truncation). A group of quantitative comparative variants is distinguished, in which the first conjunction (as) as a result of regular truncation becomes optional, resulting in quantitative-variative pairs. A type of mixed variation has been identified, implying the origin of variants by multiple modifications. Substantive-quantitative variants are formed by changing the substantive component together with varying the structure of the phraseological unit by expanding it with a variable component with a preposition. Adjectival-quantitative variants are formed as the result quantitative variation (expansion of the structure of the phraseological unit) coupled with the replacement of the adjectival element. With the help of corpus data, the preference of native speakers for some variants of idioms over others was successfully revealed.The conclusion is made that the studied phraseological units borrowed from the Bible are not static, but are ‘living’, constantly changing language units, widely used in modern English speech. Moreover, both simple and complex variation in the component composition of a given phraseological unit has no significant impact on the invariant meaning of the phraseological unit.

To the Problem of Literary Translation of W. Stevens’ Poems into Russian

Abstract

The problem of the translatability of a literary text has remained urgent. At different times, there have been debates in literary science about whether it is permissible and possible to recreate an original work by means of a foreign language. In this article, the Bakhtin thesis on the “dialogue of cultures” and the provisions on the fundamental translatability of a work of art developed in the works of Russian comparative scientists are the starting points.The purpose is to analyze the poems of the American modernist poet Wallace Stevens and his Russian – language translations.The program poem by U. Stevens’ “Thirteen Ways to look at the Blackbird” and its translations into Russian served as the material for the study. The study uses the methods of linguo-stylistic analysis of language units, the method of philological analysis of a literary text, and comparative analysis.Creative works of Stevens reflect a general tendency of complexity of the poetic language that was earlier expressed by G. Elliot. Stevens’ poetry remains a mystery, has various interpretations while the author himself does not provide detailed and clear recommendations. The symbol of poetry for Stevens is music – the most abstract kind of art that is why any art should strive towards the state of music. In his poems, Stevens creates a world of imaginary, conditional and mysterious reality. The origins of his poetics go back to romanticism and symbolism, Coleridge’s understanding of the imagination, echoes of Nietzscheanism, Freudian and Jungian motifs. That is the reason why it can be challenging to understand what the author’s poems are about. It leads to multiple interpretations of Stevens’ works. This feature of the poetic style of the American author gives translators freedom when working on Stevens’ texts and actualizes some dominants of original works while obscuring others.An accurate translation of Stevens’ poems is not the same as a successful translation. That is why the researchers recommend to take into consideration his entire artistic heritage (including his theoretical research) when analyzing individual poems. Stevens’ individual poems become parts of a single hypertext that can be understood by having a complete image of an imaginary world created by the author.The paper considers one of the curriculum poems written by Stevens’ “Thirteen ways of looking at a blackbird” and the ways of implementation of the author’s conception in its Russian translations. The analysis of the selected translations made it possible to identify the translation made by Britanishsky as the closest to the concept of equivalence. His translation conveys the lexical content of the original poem, though there are significant deviations that deprive the poem of a holistic reconstruction of the author’s idea.

Reform of Teaching Foreign Literature on the Background of the “New Concept of the Humanities” (Experience of Implementation in Modern China’s Education System)

Abstract

The new concept of the humanities emphasizes breaking down barriers between different disciplines, creating a new system of disciplines and a knowledge system, emphasizing the development of students’ thinking abilities through the transfer of knowledge, and re-establishing the link between “teaching” and “learning”.The goal is to analyze the way of reforming the teaching of foreign literature in the context of the “new concept of the humanities”.The material of the study was the documents of the Ministry of Education of the People’s Republic of China on the construction of a “new concept of the humanities”, the relevant research papers of the CNKI of China, as well as examples of the author’s training in teaching “Foreign Literature”. The study uses the literary method of research and the empirical method of research.In this context, the teaching of foreign literature should break down barriers between courses and integrate between courses. Foreign literature in various universities in China is divided into the history of foreign literature, the reading of foreign literature and the theory of foreign literature, but we must combine these courses in teaching. During the teaching of literary history knowledge, we must make students understand the characteristics of the literary language in original literary texts, we must penetrate the literary theory in the study of works, teach students to analyze specific literary texts through literary theory and criticism method, and realize the combination of theory and practice.In teaching foreign literature, we must not only have a global vision, but also have national and family feelings, in order to spread Chinese culture in the international arena and tell Chinese stories well and establish cultural confidence in cultural differences. Russian literature especially contains a deep patriotic spirit, humanitarian spirit, deep cultural heritage and civic consciousness. Through the teaching of this course, we guide students to create patriotism, build the consciousness of citizens and develop a humanitarian spirit. As a result, we will combine knowledge, ability, and a view of value in order to improve the ideological and moral literacy of students.While teaching, we encourage students to actively participate in teaching activities and discussions. Interactive activities between teachers and students can mobilize students’ enthusiasm, stimulate their creativity, provide them with opportunities to use and demonstrate their own abilities, and help them improve their language skills. At the same time, teaching foreign literature can not only impart knowledge, but also cultivate thinking ability and stimulate students’ imagination ability.The use of auxiliary tools such as multimedia, internet, film, boutique course site, can not only expand the scope of the curriculum of literature courses and make the teaching method diversified, but also keep in touch with information technology, digital culture and the network. This teaching method can stimulate students’ enthusiasm for learning and form a virtuous learning cycle.Teachers should introduce their research results, research trends, as well as scientific methods in the classroom, constantly enrich and update teaching content, conduct flexible classes, ensure students learn the latest knowledge and cutting edge concepts, at the same time cultivate students’ interests in scientific research, improve the ability of students in research and stimulate the interests of students in research.At present, assessments of foreign literature studies at various universities in China are in writing. This assessment method does not contribute to the development of creative abilities and the improvement of students’ literary assessment and analysis abilities. Therefore, we are trying to use a combination of written tests and oral tests in the assessment of learning to comprehensively improve students’ language skills and cultural literacy.The “new concept of the humanities” is to throw off the unreasonable barriers set by disciplines, not bound by the boundaries of invisible disciplines. The “new concept of the humanities” are the inevitable result of the humanities and social sciences adapting to social development. An integral task of teaching foreign literature is to cultivate outstanding talents who can serve the needs of the country and take responsibility for national revival against the backdrop of the “new concept of the humanities”.

Harmonization of Communication of the Interview Participants in Author’s TV Program: Communicative-Pragmatic and Regulative Aspects

Abstract

The problem of communication’s harmonization in different spheres is relevant in accordance with the modern communicative-cognitive paradigm of linguistic knowledge. This is especially true of media communication in connection with the media vector of development of up-to-date Russian studies. The promotion of the interview as one of the leading genres is of interest in terms of the interaction of its participants and as an object of perception of the mass addressee who perceives this media discourse.The purpose of the article is, based on the theory of regulativity as one of the directions of the communicative style of the text, to identify some linguistic mechanisms that form a harmonizing dialogue between a journalist and his guests as interview participants.The study is based on the use of the methodology and conceptual and terminological apparatus of the theory of regulativity developed in the communicative style of the text, the use of discursive, linguo-semantic, semantic-stylistic analysis. The material of the study was the author’s program “Very Personal” in the format of an interview with the famous journalist Viktor Loshak on the ORT channel.The effect of harmonious communication in the interview genre is achieved due to the overall positive and trusting emotional tone of the dialogue between the journalist and the guests; installation on the actualization of the objective successes and merits of the invited participants by the host program; the predominance of communication strategies and tactics of support, consent, compliment, self-presentation of the journalist and guests. The format of the author’s program includes a system of individual media genres, united by a common idea and image of the author of the program, which determine the integrity of the general media discourse, its coherence, conceptual completeness, communicative and pragmatic effect. In addition to the key media genre of the interview, the author’s program on ORT V. Loshak “Very personal” includes informative genres: presentation of the program and the guest, as well as etiquette genres: greeting, compliment, gratitude. Among the extralinguistic regulatory means, that form the effect of communication harmonization, the following stand out: the choice of guests – famous public figures; musical screen saver for the program; non-verbal behavior of the journalist and program participants (friendly look, supportive gestures, facial expressions); logical-compositional deployment of a discourse aimed at emphasizing the personal and professional merits of invited media persons who are of interest to a mass addressee. Linguistic regulatory means and structures that have a communicative-pragmatic effect include: quoting a guest, pick-up questions; clarifying questions, including options for answers to choose from; questions aimed at revealing the merits of the guest and his social significance; supporting remarks, the use of ameliorative evaluative vocabulary and vocabulary with the semantics of agreement, support; the appropriate use of figurative and expressive means and an explicit regulatory strategy of an amplifying-convergent type.The use of the theory of regulativity and its terminology allows us to judge some of the mechanisms for the formation of the communicative-pragmatic effect of harmonious communication between a journalist and guests during an interview in the author’s program “Very Personal” by Viktor Loshak on Public Television. The obtained observations are of interest for further development of the problem of the effectiveness of media communication and the study of the mechanisms of speech influence in the dialogue of communicants.

On Some Features of M. A. Voloshin’s Color Picture of the World and the Means of its Verbalization

Abstract

M. Voloshin’s special interest in color naming is caused both by the peculiarity of the era (Silver Age), and his passion not only for the poetic word, but also, equally, for fine art. The color picture of the world of M. Voloshin’s poems is distinguished by a variety of colors that convey shades of one color or another, and the unusualness of the created color images, in which the features of the author’s perception of the world are revealed.The article presents data on the study of the semantics and symbolic meaning of frequency colors found in the lyrical texts of M. Voloshin, data on the analysis of individual poems containing color symbolism in order to determine the meaning of color painting for understanding the poet’s worldview and the features of his creative manner.In the course of the study, methods of semantic-stylistic, contextological, and motive analysis were used, which make it possible to reveal the features of the embodiment and the meaning of M. Voloshin’s color picture of the world.The variety of color embodiment of the lyrics of M. A. Voloshin is associated with the peculiarity of the worldview of Voloshin the artist, who gave himself the attitude “to absorb all forms, all colors into oneself with the eyes”. In addition, the poet’s passion for Symbolist and Impressionist teachings influenced the multicoloredness of his poetry. Color painting, being one of the main means of expressing the author’s intentions, helps to convey the subtlest color shades and the symbolism of the feelings of the lyrical hero. The most frequent colors used by M. Voloshin: red in its many variations, gold, gray, purple – often contain metaphysical symbolism. To convey color, M. Voloshin also uses lexemes denoting plants (flowers), as well as mineralogical designations.The study of M. Voloshin’s lyrical tests for the use of color in them led to the conclusion that the color picture of the poet’s world is rich and diverse incarnations: colorful epithets, unusual metaphors, comparisons, synesthetic images, mineralogical designations – an incomplete list of the means and techniques used by the author. The significance of the conducted research lies in the reflection of the author’s worldview through the comprehension of the symbolic meanings of the image embedded in the color names.

A Short Story “Bobok” by F M Dostoevsky Translated by b L Brazol: Genre Transformations

Abstract

A short story “Bobok” by F.M. Dostoevsky is regarded to be one of the most complicated works of the writer not only from the point of the number of issues being discussed, but also in terms of genre identification. The scholars believe that it is possible to consider the story as an example of the synthesis of genres. The purpose of the article is to reveal the peculiarities of the reception of “Bobok” in the USA by identifying the genre shifts in the English translation of the story. The material of the study is a short story “Bobok” and its English translation made by Boris L. Brazol in 1949. The original and translated texts are analyzed within the philological approach including the bases of comparative analysis. Additionally, the study uses the findings of Russian and foreign Dostoevsky scholars, as well as the works on genre theory, reception theory, and fiction translation. Compared to the original text, the English version of “Bobok” demonstrates formal and issue-related transformations that are primarily induced by the peculiarities of the literature in the USA in the middle of the 20th century: emergence of black humor as one of the most adequate forms of creative writings in the context of cultural crisis. The translator focuses on conveying those story’s features that coincide with the key characteristics of black humor genre, i.e. satirico-humorous effect, borderline condition of character, overlapping of reality and unreality. The complex narrative structure is not preserved; there is no iconic linkage in conveying the words that constitute the logical gradation and are directly connected with the main issues of the story.The absence of the complex structure of the story in the translation, including the ignorance of iconic linkage in conveying the key concepts of the original, blurs out the genre diversity of “Bobok” and results in issue-related transformations. The complicated story “Bobok” is perceived in English version as a black humor writing, which in its turn identifies the stage of “passive saturation” of American culture with such texts followed by the stage of blossom (“active transmission”) of black humor poetics in 1950–70th.

Techniques for Creating the Image of a Child Character in the Stories of V. Astafyev’s Book “The Last Bow”

Abstract

In the autobiographical book “The Last Bow” V. Astafiev artistically comprehends the theme of childhood, which has already been noted by researchers. However, literary scholars, as a rule, concentrate on the analysis of the image of the central character and his grandmother. In our opinion, the writer’s ideas about childhood are also manifested through the images of secondary characters-children, relations with which reveal the originality of the autobiographical hero.The purpose of the study is to analyze the techniques for creating images of children (Vitya and Sanka) in the book “The Last Bow”.Material and methodology of the study. The material of the study is the stories of the book “The Last Bow”, which tell us about the relationship between two characters – Vitya and Sanka. The methodological basis of the study is the works on psychologism poetics, autobiographical prose by M. M. Bakhtin, L. Ya. Ginzburg, A. P. Skaftymov, A. B. Esin. A structural-semiotic approach is used to analyze the image of a character.The creation of images of Vitya and Sanka is based on psychologism techniques (portraiting, behavioral reactions in conflict or crisis situations, the transfer of an internal state through dialogic speech and internal monologues). At the same time, V. Astafiev uses elements of intertextuality, which make it possible to combine the social and everyday specifics of an autobiographical narrative with a conditionally symbolic generalization in the characters’ poetics (in the story “The Horse with a Pink Mane” the biblical motif of temptation is used, in the story “Dark Dark Night” - robinsonade plot, which implies self-determination in the conditions of being on an island).In the book “The Last Bow”, the stories about Vitya and Sanka represent a certain meta-plot in which the dynamics of the images of boys is determined by the process of their growing up, of formation of their personalities. The changes are especially showed in the image of Sanka. If in “The Pink-Maned Horse” he acts as a trickster-tempter in relation to the autobiographical hero; then in “The Photo I’m Not In” he is able to give up his interests in order to support a school friend.

Prose Miniatures of A. Givargizov from the Book “Transition”: Experience of Analysis of a Creolized Text

Abstract

The existing studies of techniques and strategies of text creolization prove the interest of scientists in semiotically complex objects that combine the principles of verbal and visual coding of information. However, the creolized prose miniature for children is a little-studied phenomenon, although it occupies a significant place in the history of children’s literature and the modern literary process. The aim is to analyze the features of creolized prose miniatures for children created by modern writer Arthur Givargizov and illustrator Victoria Semykina. The research material is prose miniatures from the book “Transition” by Arthur Givargizov. The research is carried out in line with the semiotic approach to text analysis, based on literary works on prose miniature, including in the works of modern children’s writers, as well as on techniques and strategies of text creolization.The creolized prose miniature for children is an integral verbal-visual phenomenon that incorporates the properties of various sign systems. Its characteristic features are a laconic plot and (or) figuratively completed verbal text that makes up a figurative and semantic unity with visual elements.Prosaic miniatures can go back to a variety of genre matrices. Artur Givargizov turns to the genres of anecdote and fiction. The absurdist poetics of the texts also determines the specifics of the illustrations: they show the artist’s play with proportions, onomatopoeia is used as elements of illustration, etc.Thematically, the miniatures of Givargizov’s book “Transition” beat the title of the book. In general, they are about the rules of a child’s existence in social and fantasy-game realities, about the possibilities and difficulties of transition from one to another. Another meaning of the title of the book is the comprehension of the difficulties of transition from the language of traffic rules symbols to the language of the game, which cause communicative failures in the relations of children and adults. When creolizing miniatures of the book “Transition”, different strategies are used: in most cases, the image frames the text, creating additional semantic accents and bringing the artist’s interpretation into the ideological and thematic field of the work. But in a number of A. Givargizov’s miniatures, the visual appearance of the printed text created by V. Semykina is turned into part of the illustration: the font and its location completes the image, which, in turn, complements or reinforces the associative and ideological-thematic content of the verbal text. The figurative-semantic fusion of the verbal and visual components in the book “Transition” allows us to talk about a creolized text. Through the strategies of croelization by Arthur Givargizov and Victoria Semykina, the author’s game is realized with the reader/viewer, who is invited to grasp the semantic relationship of the verbal and visual components of the text.

“Arzamas Code” and V. A. Zhukovsky’s Creative Models in “The Tale of How Ivan Ivanovich Quarelled with Ivan Nikiforovich” by N. V. Gogol

Abstract

In the collection of stories “Mirgorod” N. V. Gogol discusses what is behind the folk idyll. He shows the absurdity of any deviation from his harmonic model (the mixing of superstition and dogmas of Christianity in the “Viy”, the landlords’ quarrel over a stupid question in the “The Tale of How Ivan Ivanovich Quarreled with Ivan Nikiforovich”). The illogicality of the last story is particularly frightening. It signals the disintegration of the culture of good neighborhood, friendship and patriarchy.In the first third of the XIX century, when Gogol wrote “Evenings on a Farm Near Dikanka”, friendly societies appeared en masse in Russia and the genre of “epistle to a friend” was actively developing, so the motive of the quarrel, already represented in the nomination of the work, could cause negative associations.The genre of the “epistle to a friend” was actively developed by the participants of the literary society “Arzamas”, which could well become the subject of Gogol’s reflection. The business card of “Arzamas” was “galimat’ya” (nonsense), friendly gatherings. Absurd speeches of friends acquired a written form. The poet V. A. Zhukovsky almost always recorded the comic texts of “Arzamas” meetings.In this regard, we consider it legitimate to refer to this facet of Zhukovsky’s talent in the further analysis of Gogol’s “The Tale of How Ivan Ivanovich Quarreled with Ivan Nikiforovich”, in which absurdism and caricatures are everywhere revealed.The purpose of the article is to identify the “Arzamas code” and analyze the creative models of Zhukovsky’s works in Gogol’s text. This analysis is being conducted for the first time and will expand the range of interpretations of the “The Tale of How Ivan Ivanovich Quarreled with Ivan Nikiforovich”. The choice of Zhukovsky’s works models is justified by the fact that the poet was the permanent secretary of “Arzamas”; in addition, the poet continues to a certain extent the sentimental line in Russian literature, which correlates with the subjectivity of epistles to a friend chosen for analysis.The material of the article is the work of N. V. Gogol “The Tale of How Ivan Ivanovich Quarreled with Ivan Nikiforovich”, “Arzamas” protocols of V. A. Zhukovsky, as well as such his works as the dramatic poem “The Maid of Orleans”; the poem “Theon and Aeschines”; articles from the journal “Herald of Europe”; ballads “Lenore”, “Lyudmila”, “Svetlana”; epistle to a friend “To Batyushkov”, etc.; fable, “The Quarrel of the bald”, etc. Comparative and biographical research methods are used in the work.The final story of the tetralogy is characterized by absurdity, not harmony. There is a mixture of contexts in the story: the bright, idyllic side by side with destructive denial, the base and sinful penetrates into the consciousness of Gogol’s characters. In addition, the narrator puts an equal sign between a person and a thing.The man in the final story of “Mirgorod” gradually turns into a predator and pest. The main characters destroy the natural harmony by quarreling, which contradicts the principles of Zhukovsky’s creativity. The poet often sings friendship, love and harmony in his lyrics, but in Gogol’s story we see a crisis of these values.In Gogol’s story there are not enough components of friendly messages like those that Zhukovsky wrote.The idyllic model of Zhukovsky, which was still visible in the “Old-World Landowners”, completely disappears in the “The Tale of How Ivan Ivanovich Quarreled with Ivan Nikiforovich”. Firstly, patriarchy is leveled. A carefree stay in the bosom of nature is no longer enough for a person. Secondly, the reader in the “The Tale of How Ivan Ivanovich Quarreled with Ivan Nikiforovich” does not see families and couples (Ivan Ivanovich and Ivan Nikiforovich are single and have no children). Idyll in “Mirgorod” is now impossible, and harmonious relations between the characters are also impossible.The heroes do not seek to learn new things, do not want to give up harmful passions. No one can reason with those who have quarreled. Ivan Ivanovich and Ivan Nikiforovich turn into litigators, and litigation for former friends becomes a cult, an obsession. They do not hear the voice of conscience, nor the advice of others. The development and resurrection of the characters is postponed forever.The famous “Arzamas galimat’ya” plays the role of a facilitator in the quarrel of the heroes. Gogol’s narrator deliberately uses it to demonstrate the uniqueness of the phenomenon of friendship.There is a substitution of concepts everywhere in the work. Friendship turns into anti-friendship, idyll turns into anti-idyll, and the base replaces eternal values. The absurdity of Gogol’s story resembles “Arzamas” carnival. The narrator is characterized by high pathos when describing lowly objects.Thus, in “The Tale of how Ivan Ivanovich quarreled with Ivan Nikiforovich” we see a decisive rejection of Gogol’s youthful aspirations to comprehend and reproduce Zhukovsky’s high idyllic and elegiac models. It is clear from the writer’s text that friendship is now a rare spiritual phenomenon. This destroys the model of epistle to a friend and creates a kind of antagonism, uncharacteristic of Zhukovsky’s creative thinking. Gogol’s exaltation and imitation of the poet in “Mirgorod” are weakening. Zhukovsky believes that all changes in the world are for the better, but Gogol’s opinion on this is somewhat different. He often shows a distorted, deformed world. By the end of “Mirgorod” there is no place for the aesthetic, because Ivan Ivanovich and Ivan Nikiforovich are disgusting in their pettiness. Gogol shows the result of man’s falling away from patriarchal traditions and Christian values, which leads to a violation of the universe logic (this was seen earlier in the death of the main characters in the novels “Old World Landowners”, “Taras Bulba”, “Viy”).

Review of the Monograph by E. A. Bazhenova, V. I. Shenkman “The Concept of School and Its Discursive Realization”.

Abstract

The dominant role of the school in the life of modern society, its significance for the education and upbringing of the younger generation, the importance of analyzing ideas about the up-to-date school, the need to develop a methodology for conceptualizing the concept of school in the mass consciousness determined the relevance of the monograph by E. A. Bazhenova and V. I. Shenkman.A descriptive method and methods of analysis, synthesis, comparison and generalization were used in the monograph. The scientific novelty of the monograph is due to a comprehensive description of the content of the school concept based on the existing stereotypes of native speakers of the Russian language with use of various sources, including song discourse and Internet discourse. The study by E. A. Bazhenova and V. I. Shenkman was carried out in line with the modern cognitive-discursive paradigm of linguistic knowledge based on the analysis of the school concept at the present stage of its comprehension by Russian native speakers and in the aspect of diachrony. The integrated approach with lexico-semantic, functional, discursive analysis of the lexical representatives of this concept, the use of a comparative analysis of their actual meanings in the context of various discursive practices with the usual semantics of these units based on numerous lexicographic sources, allowed the authors of the monograph to identify and deeply and systematically describe the content of the concept of school. The monograph identifies the main trends in the interpretation of the concept and the dynamics of ideas about the school in the collective consciousness of Russians. The main factors that are associated with these changes were determined in the monograph.The extensive empirical and lexicographic material used in the monograph (52 dictionaries), reliance on modern achievements in linguistics and its methodology determine the reliability and validity of the results obtained in the study. The monograph by E. A. Bazhenova and V. I. Shenkman, due to its relevance, theoretical and practical significance, will be in demand by specialists in cognitive linguistics, discourse studies, functional stylistics, in the university practice of teaching these disciplines, as well as by everyone who is interested in the problems of modern education. The material of the monograph is of interest to teachers, psychologists, and sociologists.
