Abstract
The author examines the results of socio-economic development of an independent Vietnam since 1946. The emphasis is placed on the Renovation period, especially after 1996. The paper provides periodization, statistics of growth, other economic information for each step, brief information on education, science, culture, people's wellbeing. It summarizes the outcomes and achievements of 1986-2014, describes the main documents and programs adopted by the CPV and implemented by the state under transition. Along with successes in socio-economic reconstruction the author reveals some constraints and challenges facing the country today. These include the problems of functioning and institutional weaknesses of the market economy with socialist orientation, the shortcomings of state economic management. He concludes that there is not yet a clear understanding in Vietnam of what it is and how this system must evolve, and that current reality requires theoretical explanation.
