Linguistic and Linguodidactic Potential of Non-manual Component in Russian Sign Language: a Study of Initialized Signs

Resumo
The article discusses a linguistically relevant phenomenon of initialization and its effect, initialized sign, as part of the lexis of Russian Sign Language (RSL). Properties of such gestures are interpreted as inseparable from the linguistic tasks set while teaching RSL to different target groups, students and adults. Some weaknesses in definitions of initialized gestures are singled out, the vulnerabilities affecting RSL acquisition, explanations are offered, a few research and teaching challenges are outlined. The results of analysis contribute to descriptions of RSL proficiency levels, which is topical for educating interpreters and teachers.
