F3− molecular ions in fluoride crystals

The UV absorption spectra of F₃⁻ molecular ions in LaF₃, SrF₂, CaF₂, and BaF₂ crystals doped with rare-earth elements are studied. Comparison of radiation-colored and additively colored crystals reveals the absorption bands of F₃⁻ hole centers in the region near 6 eV. Nonempirical calculations of optical transitions agree well with experimental results.
